If I had a nickel for everybody who started law school with me saying they were doing it because they wanted to help people, I’d have lot of nickels. I was one of those starry-eyed idealists myself. But here’s the thing that amazes me_ that’s exactly what I do, every single day.
When people ask me what I do for a living, I always tell them I help people.
It’s why I decided to become a lawyer and it’s still my passion today.
But what I’ve learned is that sometimes, I can help people best by not helping them. At least, not helping them myself. Through my work, I’ve managed to connect and develop relationships with many other lawyers and professionals in a wide range of fields, including areas where I’m not an expert.
Like Confucius said, “True wisdom is knowing what you don’t know.”
Since I can’t help with every single issue, I work hard on developing relationships with other people who will be able to help my clients. People who bring the same level of professionalism to their business that I do. That way, whenever a client comes up with a question or an issue I can’t resolve, they know I’ll still be able to help by connecting them with the right person.
So many people out there need legal help, and I want to reach as many of them as possible. Not just for what they need legally, but in any other areas in their life where they may feel “stuck.”
That’s where you come in. It’s just human nature to love helping others. So if you know someone who could use help, or who’s dealing with an issue that seems over their heads, pass on my information. Let them know I’ll be happy to get their call, whether I can help them personally or not.
It could be something to do with an international business deal, a high-stakes legal dispute, or succession planning for a family business. Perhaps someone you know has elderly parents or has lost a parent recently, or is contemplating a new business venture. There are so many other areas as well – and too often, people don’t seek expert help until it’s too late, making situations far more complicated than they have to be.
Usually, that’s just because they don’t know the right person – or they think they don’t. And that’s why I enjoy making those connections_ helping them find the right person, right away, before situations escalate into bigger problems.
I want to encourage you to do the same. Even if it doesn’t have to do with law, this is your invitation to get in touch with me. I’ll do my best to refer you to someone who can help.
Legendary business consultant Peter Drucker used to tell companies, “Do what you do best and outsource the rest.” I make my practice better every day by focusing on what I do best, which is helping family offices and family enterprises create long-term financial and family stability, providing strategic counsel and resolving high-stake disputes.
In short, I help people.
