This month, New York County Lawyers Association (NYCLA) will host a CLE course for attorneys who work with family offices. I’ve been asked to moderate the discussion, “Family Offices_ A to Z About Acting as a Legal Counsel for a Family Office.” The panel includes Timothy P. Terry, Secretary and General Counsel, Hartz Capital; Steve Thayer, Founding Partner of Handler Thayer LLP; and Richard C. Wilson, Founder, Family Offices Group.
There is a growing need for qualified attorneys who are competent and knowledgeable regarding the complex legal needs of family offices. As innovative executives face unprecedented opportunities in building valuable technology in companies and in other sectors, this new class of wealth holders needs qualified legal advisers. Multigenerational families of wealth are also seeking the most competent legal advisers who are familiar with trends related to direct investments, corporate transactions, and holding companies.
This is an important discussion. Wealth holders from all backgrounds have grown increasingly frustrated with private equity, hedge funds, and venture capital institutional investment results (or lack thereof), and the fees associated with these investments. Experienced attorneys have an opportunity to add valuable insights to high-net-worth individuals and family offices, especially regarding direct investment transactions.
The panel is co-sponsored by The Association for Lawyers In Transition. It will be useful for experienced family office legal professionals and lawyers in transition who are exploring family office law as a focus.
I hope you’ll join me for this valuable discussion with the experts who are most capable of sharing important trends and challenges related to family office law. Press is welcome.
